Fang Clara Fang, assistant professor of civil engineering, CETA, recently had a paper published in the refereed Journal of Transportation Engineering, a publication of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The article, entitled “Development of an Optimization Methodology for Adaptive Traffic Signal Control at Diamond Interchanges,” proposed a new method and the associated computational algorithm in response to real-time traffic demand. The optimization process, solved by dynamic programming, is based on loop detected information obtained from a vehicle projection arrival-departure interactive model. The research is aimed at improving traffic operations at signalized interchanges that provide the connection between various highway facilities (e.g., freeway-arterial, freeway-freeway, etc.) and often cause congestion and safety problems in the area.
