Woody Doane, professor of sociology, Hillyer, presented a paper, “New Song, Same Old Tune: Racial Discourse in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,” at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in Montreal on Aug. 11. While at the conference, Doane also concluded his term as chair of ASA’s 800-member Section of Racial and Ethnic Minorities. As chair, he presided over the section council and business meetings and hosted the reception and awards ceremony.
Doane also recently published an article, “What is Racism? Racial Discourse and Racial Politics,” in the journal Critical Sociology. In the article, Doane explores how competing definitions of racism are used in public debates over racial issues.
