Jacob Harney, associate professor/chair, department of biology, A&S, and Marissa Cloutier, biology and nutrition instructor, Hillyer College, published their AUCX 190 ("Issues of Health & Society: Weighing In") course model with SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities).

Harney’s and Cloutier’s model was one of four selected for publication and was a primary feature at this year's national SENCER Summer Institute in August, with Harney presenting.

The SENCER models are curricular approaches to improving science learning and supporting engagement with complex issues. You can learn more about SENCER and read Harney’s and Cloutier’s course model at http://www.sencer.net/models.cfm.

The AUCX 190 course, which was offered for the first time last spring, evaluated the physiological, psychological and social causes and consequences of obesity in children and adults. A collaborative study with the University of Hartford Magnet School provided an opportunity for students taking the course to educate the elementary school children on healthy eating and exercise.

The course will be offered again in spring 2007.
