A paper by Assistant Professor Osama Mohamed (CETA) titled “A Structural Engineering Perspective on Progressive Collapse: Examination of Analysis and Modeling Methods” was published in the proceedings of The Eighth International Conference on Computational Structures Technology. The conference took place Sept. 12-15 at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Mohamed’s paper presents important aspects of progressive collapse investigations, of interest to structural engineers that are being studied by investigators or presented in certain building codes. These issues include: 1) analysis methods, 2) structure/load modeling issues, 3) level of protection provided to a structure, 4) modeling of joints, and 5) consideration of the effects of high strain rates on mechanical properties.

In addition, Mohamed’s paper, “Progressive Collapse of Structures: Annotated Bibliography and Comparison of Codes and Standards,” will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities. Twelve papers were accepted for this special issue, representing the current state of practice and research regarding the subject of progressive collapse and the design implications of emerging codes and standards. Mohamed’s paper seeks to explore aspects of the current state of knowledge on progressive collapse in the technical literature. The paper also discusses loads, structural analysis requirements, and design approaches in United States standards and guides as well as selected international building codes and standards.

Sarah F. Pearlman, associate professor in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology, A&S, had a paper published in the Journal of Lesbian Studies, 2005, Vol. 9, No. 3.

The article, titled “Then and Now: When Mothers Learn a Daughter is a Lesbian,” was based on in-depth interviews of 34 mothers who learned that their daughters were lesbians. Conducted 10 to 11 years apart in 1990 and 2000-2001, the interviews offer a comparison of the initial reactions of mothers prior to and following a time of marked changes in attitudes towards homosexuality.

Pearlman has also been appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of Lesbian Studies, 2006-2007.
