Accolades: Susan Coleman, Ingrid Russell

Susan Coleman, professor of finance, Barney School of Business, gave a talk titled "Economic Trends, Key Issues for the Manufacturing Sector, and A Role for Education" at the monthly meeting of the Northeast Chapter of the Laser Institute of America on Sept. 26 in East Hartford.


Ingrid Russell, professor of computer science, A&S, has had a number of papers published this year and has presented at several professional computer science conferences.
  • One of her co-authored papers ranked second in the “best paper” award category at the Northeast Regional Conference of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in College held April 21-22, 2006, in Worcester, Mass. The paper, titled “Pedagogical Possibilities for Dice Game Pig,” and co-authored with Todd Neller of Gettysburg College and Zdravko Markov of Central Connecticut State University, is published in the Journal of Computing Sciences Vol. 21, No. 5.


  • At the 11th Annual Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE-06) held June 26-27, 2006, in Bologna, Italy, Russell presented a poster paper titled “Teaching AI through Machine Learning Projects.” A co-authored tutorial titled “An Introduction to the Weka Data Mining System” was presented at ITiCSE-06 by Russell’s co-author, Zdravko Markov.


  • A paper co-authored with Markov and Neller titled “Clue Deduction: Professor Plum Teaches Logic” was presented at the 19th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Conference held May 11-13, 2006, in Melbourne, Fla. The paper appears in the conference proceedings published by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence Press.


  • Russell also participated on a panel titled “Non-Traditional Projects in the Undergraduate AI Course.” The panel was presented at the 37th Annual Association for Computing Machinery Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education held March 1-5, 2006, in Houston, Texas.
