A Busy Sports Weekend

There was good news and bad news for the University’s sports teams during a during a high-profile weekend for the Hawks.
  • The women’s soccer team, which won the 2006 America East Championship, ended its season Friday with a 2-0 loss to Rutgers in the first round of the NCAA Women’s College Cup.


  • After an impressive 62-45 victory over Dartmouth in the opening round of the preseason WNIT Friday night, the women’s basketball team fell to 11th-ranked Purdue, 83-51, in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Sunday.


  • The men’s basketball team opened its 2006-07 season with a hard-fought 69-59 loss to eighth-ranked Georgetown University on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Hawks face Towson University tonight in Maryland.

There was also good news this weekend for University alumnus Jerry Kelly, who teamed up with fellow golfer Rod Pampling to win the Merrill Lynch Shootout in Naples, Fla., beating Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank with a bogey on the first playoff hole. Pampling and Kelly split $675,000 from the $2.75 million purse.
