Hawks Win Second Straight Regular Season Title
Posted 3/5/2007
The Hartford women’s basketball team won sole possession of the regular season America East title Saturday with a 60-56 win over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
This is the second straight regular season championship for the Hawks, who wrapped up the season with a record of 22-7 overall and 15-1 in conference play, matching the program best for conference wins. The Hawks clinched at least a share of the regular season championship last week, but needed Saturday’s win to ensure sole possession of the title.
Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team’s season came to an end Saturday with an 81-62 loss to top-seeded University of Vermont in the quarterfinals of the America East Championship tournament in Boston. The Hawks won their first round game Friday evening in dramatic fashion, beating Stony Brook 49-47 at the buzzer after rallying from 19 points down in the second half. The Hartford men finished the year with a 13-18 overall record.
Vermont and Albany advanced to the America East Men’s Championship title game, which will take place on Saturday, March 10.
The America East Women’s Basketball Championship will get under way Thursday at Binghamton University. Top-seeded Hartford will play in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 9, at 6 p.m., against either No. 8 Albany or No. 9 New Hampshire.
