The University of Hartford women’s basketball season came to an end Sunday with an 81-40 loss to South Carolina in the second round of the postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

The Hawks’ match-up with South Carolina came after a frustrating, two-day bus ride to Columbia, S.C., that resulted from Friday’s snowstorm along the East Coast. The team left Hartford early Friday morning to catch a flight out of New York, but the flight was canceled because of the weather conditions. The team proceeded by bus to Philadelphia and then to Washington, but was unable to fly out of either of those cities. The Hawks rode the rest of the way to South Carolina by bus, arriving after 8 p.m. Saturday.

Hartford closes out the season with an overall record of 25-9, marking the Hawks’ second-straight season with 25 or more wins. In addition, the team made school history by playing in the postseason for the third consecutive year.

Hartford reached the second round of the WNIT by beating Bucknell Thursday in the opening round, becoming the first America East team to record postseason wins in back-to-back seasons.

In Sunday’s game against South Carolina, the Hawks were led by MaryLynne Schaefer, who finished with 15 points, all on three-pointers. With her five three-pointers in the game, Schaefer broke her own single season record for three pointers in a season with 57. Danielle Hood was second on the team in scoring with nine points, while also finishing second with five rebounds. Diana Delva led the team in rebounding with six.
