The NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification announced Thursday that it has approved the certification status of 41 Division I member institutions, including the University of Hartford.

The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in an institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993.

The University of Hartford received its first athletics certification in 1999, and its certification was reaffirmed following an interim report in 2003. A designation of certified means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.

The certification process, which involves a self-study led by an institution’s president or chancellor, includes a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; equity; and student-athlete well-being.

The University of Hartford’s self-study began in September 2005. A steering committee representing a cross-section of the University community conducted the self-study over the course of nine months, and submitted it to the NCAA last May. In the fall of 2006, an external review team came to campus for an evaluation visit.

The University’s NCAA Certification Steering Committee was chaired by John Carson, vice president for university relations. Carson said that more than 30 faculty, staff members, and student-athletes contributed to the self-study. Among those who played especially significant roles were subcommittee chairs Catherine Certo, Betsey Smith, and Jacob Harney, Carson said. He also cited the administrative support provided by Christine Grant, Ellen Crandall, and Jonathan Easterbrook.
