The Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the definitive dictionary of the English language, is now available online to University of Hartford students, faculty, and staff.

English is a language that is constantly changing. With the OED, you can find out not only what a word means now, but what it meant 500 years ago, or when it first showed up in written English. Quotations from a variety of sources illustrate the history of the word. And every word is searchable.

The OED Online can be accessed from several points on the Libraries' Web pages. You can look it up in the catalog just like any other book. You'll find it in our databases (under the General, Literature and Drama subject categories). It's included in the list of Dictionaries in the Web Reference Tools. And it's in the Web Subject Page for English Language and Literature. It's also linked from the Allen Memorial Library Theatre Resources page, and it appears as a Quick Link on the Allen home page.

Access to the OED Online is restricted to University users. Off-campus users will need to log in using their University email username and password.

Those who prefer a book to the Internet will be pleased to know that Mortensen Library also has the printed Oxford English Dictionary (all 20 volumes of the 1989 second edition, plus supplements and additions). Find it on the main level of the library, REF PE 1625 .O87 1989.
