How Do We Look?
Posted 4/13/2005
Efforts are under way to develop visual identity guidelines for the university, its schools and colleges, and key organizations. Among the items that will be updated and standardized are the university seal and signature.
President Walter Harrison has asked Marcy Cain, senior director of the Office of Communication, to lead the project. Faculty and staff from many areas of the university also are involved in this effort.
“Universities are competing for attention from prospective students, donors, and the media,” Cain said. “We want to develop a visual identity that grabs people's attention and sends out a clear, consistent message about who we are.”
The design firm of WondriskaRusso is working on the project. The firm’s principal, Dennis Russo, is an award-winning graphic designer with nearly 30 years of experience working for a variety of corporate and nonprofit clients.
Russo, a Hartford Art School graduate, is conducting an inventory of the many ways the university and school signatures are currently displayed. He will make recommendations on how to rationalize these often disparate signatures to create a cohesive, consistent, and exciting visual identity system for the university.
Cain said she plans to have a comprehensive system in place and ready to roll out to the university community by the end of June.
