Spring Fling is coming up on April 30, and the University is taking steps to ensure a fun and safe weekend for students.

Lee Peters, vice president for student affairs, sent an e-mail to students on Friday (April 15), discussing the changes and enhancements to this year’s festivities. Following is the text of Peters’ letter.

Hello Students,

Spring Fling is just around the corner (April 30, 2005), and the University has worked with KAT, your program board, to develop some great new methods of making this event more enjoyable for you.

There will be lots more food available to you than has been offered in previous years. There will be a lunch/dinner barbeque outside the Commons, and this year we have added Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream, pizza and wings that will be available inside the Konover Great Room until late at night. In the morning there will be pastry available as well.

As usual, bands will be playing in the Village, and there will be inflatable attractions. But this year we have expanded so that many attractions will be located by the Commons and Sports Center, with food and fun vendors as well.

As we have evaluated past events, most of the problem issues that occur are caused not by our students, but by people who "crash" the event, have no ties to this institution, and thus no commitment to or interest in abiding by our behavioral standards . . . this is not THEIR campus. This year, we will limit participation in the event to students and their registered guests through the use of wristbands, a practice used by many other colleges and universities. Students will have one kind of wristband, guests will have a different kind of wristband, and they will be used to manage area access, not drinking age.

Messages will be circulating shortly to explain how you will receive your wristband and how you may register guests.

Alcohol consumption will be allowed for students of legal age in the Village public areas, but cans and bottles will not be allowed in any public areas. We are asking that you utilize plastic cups. This should help with trash problems, broken glass, etc.

We are hoping for a great Spring Fling, with great entertainment, support from students, staff and faculty, and a good time for all. Please do all that you can to join with KAT in making this a great event.

Sincerely,
Dr. J. Lee Peters
