Bernard den Ouden, professor of philosophy, A&S, has had an article published in the most recent edition of Contemporary Philosophy. It is “Humboldtian Humanism and the Science of Linguistics.” W. von Humboldt was a resolute humanist, a pioneering pluralist, and a strong advocate for the education and social and political enfranchisement of women. His translations and understanding of non-Western literatures were crucial to the evolution of the idea of multiple perspectives and a genuine democracy of knowledge and cultures.
Mari A. Firkatian, assistant professor of history, Hillyer College, has been interviewed live on Bulgarian National Radio about her research on the Armenian community in Bulgaria. Her work has focused on how successive generations of a diaspora population transfer cultural fluency.
Pat Morelli, director of the Center for Reading and Writing, was elected to the Steering Committee of the Northeast Writing Centers Association (NEWCA) at the organization’s 21st annual conference held at Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y., earlier this month. Twenty years ago this month, NEWCA’s inaugural meeting was held at the University of Hartford.
At this year’s conference, Morelli participated with NEWCA members from Eastern Connecticut State University and York College in a combined presentation and roundtable discussion of “Writing Centers at the Crossroads: Envisioning our Futures.”
Last month, Morelli and E. Lynne Golden, director of Learning Plus, copresented at the 56th Annual Convention of the Conference on College Composition and Communication in San Francisco. Their presentation, “Bridging the Writing Center to Disability Service Providers: Opening the Gates to Academic Access at the University of Hartford,” illustrated models of their cross-departmental academic support initiatives that assist students with first-year writing and other writing in the disciplines.
