Recognizing Faculty and Staff Service

Faculty and staff who are celebrating special anniversaries with the university were honored earlier this month for their years of service and dedication.

The annual Recognition Day lunch paid tribute to employees with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service to the University of Hartford.

For the second year in a row, a Hartt School faculty member was recognized for 40 years of service. Last year, it was Professor of Trumpet Roger Murtha; this year, Professor of Guitar Richard C. Provost celebrated four decades at The Hartt School and the University of Hartford.

Provost earned his bachelor’s degree from Hartt in 1960, and started teaching at Hartt and several other schools shortly thereafter. In 1964, Provost founded The Hartt School’s Classical Guitar Department, which he chaired for 23 years.

Provost teamed up with one of his former doctoral students, Alan Goldspiel, in 1988 to form the critically acclaimed Goldspiel/Provost Classical Guitar Duo. The duo has performed, lectured, and conducted master classes all over the country, and they recently released their fourth CD, An Essential Reflection, on Brioso Records (www.brioso.com).

Despite his success as a performer and recording artist, Provost still loves to teach, and after 40 years, he has no plans to stop.

“As long as the students want to study with me, I’ll keep teaching,” Provost said.
