A small group of faculty and students is working to promote “peace studies” at the University of Hartford.

The effort began as a result of a student project for PSY 380, “The Psychology of Courageous Behavior,” taught by Hillyer College Professor of Psychology Sharon Shepela. Johanna B. Conant, a former adjunct faculty member who is auditing PSY 380, brought up the idea of “peace studies” after she heard Georgetown University law professor Colman McCarthy speak about the importance of balancing courses that teach war with courses that teach peace.

A “Teach Peace” project team was formed with Shepela as advisor. The team includes Conant as well as undergraduate students Alyssa Schultz, Fran Platner, and David Calzone.

When the "Teach Peace" project was introduced at two recent meetings of the Campus Alliance for Progressive Politics and Action (CAPPA), CAPPA members encouraged the project team to move forward with the peace studies initiative.

On Thursday, April 28, CAPPA will meet at noon in Hillyer 312 to discuss the possible development of an All-University Curriculum (AUC) peace studies course. Interested faculty are invited to attend.

Members of the project team have undertaken a number of initiatives to promote peace studies at the university. For example, two students on the team found bibliographies and syllabi on peaceful conflict resolution and provided them to a faculty member who is planning to use the material in her conflict resolution course. One student researched and found grant opportunities for peace studies. Another student has researched opportunities to teach peace across curricula and disciplines.

“Teaching peace is an important non-violent, non-intrusive method to encourage students . . . to envision that they can effect peaceful solutions in small or large ways within an increasingly globalized world,” said Conant. “Peace studies provide exciting new subject matter for history, political science, economics, education, literature, and social science students.”
