The campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity (Uha Habitat) recently re-launched its website to showcase a new logo and promote its “Raise the Roof” home sponsorship campaign.

The launch of the new website, located at http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/habitat, coincides with the release of a new Habitat for Humanity International logo. “As one of the largest campus chapters in the country, we feel it is important to move quickly with the adoption of this new logo, and move forward in home sponsorship,” said Gil Rogers, Director of Development for Uha Habitat.

The campus chapter would like to sponsor the construction of a home in Hartford, which costs about $75,000, Rogers said. The money goes towards the up-front costs of building the house (materials, excavation, state fees, etc.). The person who will eventually own and live in the house is required to put in 150 hours helping to build the home (known as “sweat equity”), and volunteer 50 hours on another home in Hartford (“community tithing”). The homeowner also is required to pay off a zero interest mortgage, totaling $75,000. The money from the mortgage payments is put back into another home for someone else, creating a ripple effect.

As a campus chapter with more than 50 current members, as well as a roster of over 100 friends and alumni, Uha Habitat has been identified as a “Capacity Building Chapter” by Habitat for Humanity International. This means that the International Habitat leadership feels that Uha Habitat is a prime candidate for home sponsorship.

Recently, Uha Habitat received the 2004-2005 Community Service Award from the University of Hartford Student Government Association (SGA). Uha Habitat has received this award since 2001. Additionally, Uha Habitat has been recognized by SGA as the “Club of the Year” for the second year in a row.

In order to raise the funds necessary for home sponsorship, Uha Habitat realizes it must involve the University of Hartford community as a whole, Rogers said. “We are really calling on the support of all of the clubs and organizations on this campus to really do something good not only for the city of Hartford, but something that is in direct support of the University of Hartford’s mission of a private university with a public purpose.”
