For the second year in a row, the university’s student advertising team has won first place in a regional competition and is headed to the national finals.

The team took the top prize in District 1 of the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition, held at Quinnipiac University on April 23.

The team, comprising 13 undergraduate communication majors, has been working since September to create a new campaign for Yahoo! to promote its products to the teen market.

The students’ campaign included a “plans book,” which was mailed to judges in early April, and a presentation, which recommended that Yahoo! launch a new teen website called “Yahoo! PULSE.” The website, the creative marketing strategies, and the tagline, “Your Life. Your Pulse. It’s You!” were praised by the judging panel, which was made up of five advertising executives, including one from Yahoo! Canada.

For the fifth time in 10 years, the University of Hartford team will advance to the national competition, which is held in conjunction with the AAF’s National Conference. This year’s event will be held at The Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tenn., June 4-7.

The faculty adviser for the university’s advertising team is Randy Jacobs, associate professor of communication. The team members are: Victoria Brown, Leigh Couture, Danielle Cyr, David Eng, Meryl Faden, Gail Felcher, Natifia Gaines, Gust Gallucci, Megan Herchenroder, John Lutz, Kelly Pepenella, Allison Sargent, Stefanie Wells, and Stas Lipovetskiy.
