The university’s student-run television news show has received a first-place award in a regional competition.

STN Channel 2 News was named best non-daily newscast in the Northeast Region for 2004 by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) at its annual conference in April at the Sheraton Hotel in Stamford.

STN (Student Television Network) broadcasts a 30-minute live newscast every Friday afternoon over the University of Hartford’s cable television system.

The first place award for STN was judged based on the submission of three separate newscasts.

University of Hartford students receiving individual awards were Nicholas Caito, STN reporter, and Cathy Kadaras, STN chief photographer. Caito won first place for general news reporting for a piece called “Station Night Club Fire: One Year Later.” Kadaras took second place for general photography for her piece “A Visit to Lyman Orchards.”

Both STN Channel 2 and Caito will go on to compete in the national SPJ contest. Winners of that competition will be announced next fall in Las Vegas.

Attending the April event in Stamford, along with Caito and Kadaras, were STN General Manager Lee Simmons, News Director Jecoliah Ellis, Chief Engineer Allison Rockwell, and Assistant Chief Photographer Chris Bertucio.

STN also won first place in the regional competition in 2002 and was named the second place winner in 2003.
