The University of Hartford women's golf team captured its first-ever America East Women's Golf Championship last week at Orchard Creek Golf Course in Altamont, N.Y., coming from 11 shots back to overtake the University at Albany in the final round.
Hartford shot 317 as a team in the final round, trimming 34 strokes off its first-round total to finish at 668 for the tournament. Hartford head coach Donna Harris was named America East Women's Golf Coach of the Year.
Hartford's turnaround was a team effort, as four of its five golfers posted better rounds than the previous day. Freshman Adrianna DiLonardo opened with a 91 on the first day of play, the worst round of her collegiate career. She rebounded on Tuesday to shoot 77, the low round of the tournament and one of only two scores in the 70s. She finished tied for fifth overall at 168.
The other round in the 70s belonged to classmate Juliana Carrillo, who finished one shot off the individual title with a tournament total of 166. She finished tied for third overall after shooting 79 in the final round.
The America East Women's Golf Championship is in its second year. The Hawks, who finished third last year with a two-round total of 793, improved their team score by 125 strokes.
Meanwhile, the men’s golf team finished second at the American East Men’s Golf Championship. The Hartford men shot 303 as a team in the final round and 614 for the two-day tournament. Binghamton University won the men’s championship by 20 strokes, shooting a combined 290 in the final round to finish at 594 for the tournament.
