President Walter Harrison will be a guest on "The Brad Davis Show" on WDRC radio (1360 AM) on Friday, June 13, at 9:10 a.m. Harrison will discuss the University High School of Science and Engineering, which will be graduating its first class that evening in the University's Lincoln Theater.
The University High School was launched in 2004 as a joint project of the University of Hartford and Hartford Public Schools. Harrison will talk about the tremendous academic success of the school's Legacy Class of graduating seniors and the promise of the school's underclassmen, particularly when they move into their new building on the University's main campus in 2009.
Both NBC 30 and WFSB TV Channel 3 aired stories on Tuesday night’s (June 10) newscasts about the University’s new generators that provide emergency power in the event of an outage and also can help relieve strain on the region’s electrical grid.
The stories highlighted how the generators can be used to generate 5 megawatts of power, enough to power the University and to allow ISO New England to take the University off its power grid, thereby creating additional capacity and avoiding a potential brownout.
Fred Jenoure, University ombudsman and special assistant to the president, was quoted in the "Java" column in the Hartford Courant on June 7. At a program for students and parents taking part in the YMCA of Greater Hartford's Minority Achievers, Jenoure talked about how much the late Richard Weaver-Bey did for the YMCA. "We are going to miss him so much," said Jenoure, who is a YMCA board member.
Sheri Ziccardi, public relations manager for The Hartt School, was quoted in a June 9 Hartford Business Journal story about how bands now are using the web to gather fans and produce CDs instead of relying on record labels. "Today's students have been raised in a techno-heavy culture and are comfortable using technology for self-expression and communication, so marketing themselves may become easier for them in some ways than it was for their predecessors."
The Hartford Courant's "iTowns" publication on June 8 included write-ups on Harald Sandstrom, associate professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences, being presented with Donald W. Davis All-University Curriculum Award, and Jeffrey DesRosier, who just graduated from The Hartt School and was presented with the University’s John G. Lee Medal (for academic excellence and strong community service activities). Both honors were presented at the University's Commencement ceremony on May 18.
