Among the freshmen entering the University this fall are students who are being recognized by their hometown newspapers for their talents, interests and skills. These incoming students have already caught the attention of their communities for achievement in athletics and the arts.
Andrew Siano batted first and played center for Springfield’s Cathedral High School, one of the strongest baseball teams in Western Massachusetts. After an injury to his elbow during an ice hockey game, Siano worked his way back to complete recovery through rehab and since his return to baseball has been hitting close to.350, scoring double digits in RBIs. Quoted in The Republican of Springfield, his coach says of Siano, “He has been a real leader. Even when he wasn’t in the games, he was a leader.” Of his own abilities, Saino claims that stealing bases is “one of the best things I can do” because he can use his speed running.
The University has awarded a scholarship to Matt Smith, a member of the Connecticut golf team that won the 2007 New England Junior Championship. As reported in The Hartford Courant, Tourtellotte-Thompson’s Smith was runner-up last year in the CIAC Division IV championship and this year was qualifier for the CSGA Amateur. He graduated from Tourtelotte High School in Thompson, Conn.

A student who will come to the University with a portfolio in art is Casey Hanrahan of Montville, Conn. Hanrahan is among a group of young artists whose work will be on display at the Congressional Art Show in the United States Capitol this summer. Selected to represent the 2nd Congressional district, her work was chosen from eight schools that submitted entries and has been on display at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme. “Drawing is my favorite,” says Hanrahan, who has had works in the show for three years. “I definitely like to do portraits over landscapes, and shading is my favorite part.” She will enter the Hartford Art School in the fall.
