The cover story in the "Cal" section of today’s (July 17) Hartford Courant focuses on an exhibit of work by four artists, including Hartford Art School graduates Sam McKinniss and Corinne Rae Beardsley, at Hartford’s Real Art Ways. McKinniss, Beardsley, and fellow exhibitor David Politzer were winners of Real Art Ways' open-call competition and were selected by an independent jury from among 290 applicants. “It's so great to see our students being successful so early out of the gate,” says Hartford Art School Dean Power Boothe. “They were stars at the school, and they are becoming stars outside the school.” Read the full story in today’s Hartford Courant.

The nearly 100 percent graduation rate at University High School of Science and Engineering is being credited with helping to significantly boost Hartford’s overall graduation rate. The city’s graduation rate jumped from 29 percent to 36 percent over the past two years. Hartford Superintendent of Schools Steven J. Adamowski attributed half of that increase to the first-ever graduating class at University High School. The other half can be attributed to the fact that the district closed an adult education program, Adamowski said. Read the story in the July 16 Hartford Courant.

Jeffrey Cohen, associate professor of economics at the Barney School of Business, was quoted in a Scripps Howard wire service article on the future of the airline industry in the face of dramatically rising fuel prices. Cohen and other experts said that, if the trend continues, air travel will be reminiscent of the 1950s era, when commercial flying was a luxury largely reserved for the wealthy and for business travelers. Cohen said it’s likely that more small communities will lose airline service in the future. In addition, he said, “If you see less competition because of fewer airlines, then that's most likely going to lead to higher prices.”
