The team that developed the University of Hartford's first-year learning communities with a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) published two articles in national journals this spring.

“An Assessment of the Effectiveness of the University of Hartford First-Year Interest Group Model,” by Robert L. Duran, professor of communication, Guy C. Colarulli, associate provost and dean of undergraduate studies, Karen A. Barrett, associate dean of undergraduate studies and director of the All-University Curriculum, and Catherine B. Stevenson, associate professor of English and academic dean for international and honors programs, was published in the Journal of the First-Year Experience. The paper reported the results of a three-year evaluation of the university’s First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs) program. Specifically, the study found that FIGs improved student learning, fostered student community, and promoted faculty collaboration and innovation.

A second article focused on the process by which FIGs are developed. Stevenson was the lead author for the paper, “Fostering Faculty Collaboration in Learning Communities: A Developmental Approach,” which was published in Innovative Higher Education . The article was co-authored with Duran, Barrett, and Colarulli.
