More than 300 faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences and Hillyer College were informed this week about a security breach on the A&S computer server that contained personal data including their contract information and social security numbers.

The University has assured those involved, after thorough review, that there is no evidence that any private data were accessed. Moreover, the University believes that the server was not targeted for that purpose, but rather to launch virus attacks on other computers.

The server was located in a locked office in Hillyer Hall. The breach was discovered in early May during a routine technical review of network performance, and the server was removed immediately from the network. The server will remain off line until all appropriate measures are taken to strengthen its security. The University continues to enhance its policies and procedures with regard to increasing the security of computer servers.
