The Connecticut Development Authority (CDA) has reaffirmed its initial pledge of $2 million for the University of Hartford Performing Arts Center, and approved an additional $500,000 in funding.

The total pledge of $2.5 million is “very positive” news for the university, said John Carson, senior advisor for corporate and community relations.

“The CDA was really our first partner on this project, and it’s always nice when your first partner increases its original funding commitment,” Carson said.

The CDA had approved $2 million for the project in 2001, but was required to reaffirm its pledge because four years have passed since its original commitment.

The city of Hartford still must approve the financing deal, since it would be making the payments on the CDA bonds that will be sold to finance the Performing Arts Center project.

“Mayor Perez and his staff have been extremely supportive,” Carson said. The city held a public hearing on the financing of the Performing Arts Center on Monday, June 20, and the university presented testimony in support of the project.

Approximately $11 million has been raised to date for the Performing Arts Center, which will provide much-needed space for The Hartt School’s Dance, Theatre, Vocal, and Community Divisions. In addition, the new facility will expand performing arts education opportunities in North Hartford, and it will serve as an important cultural, educational, and economic resource for the community. The center will be built on the site of the former Thomas Cadillac distributorship, at the intersection of Albany Avenue and Westbourne Parkway in Hartford.
