New Development Appointments Announced

Don Rizzo, acting vice president for institutional advancement, has announced the appointment of Peter H. Congleton as director of planned giving. Rizzo also announced the appointment of Elizabeth Abbe as senior development officer for the University of Hartford, with a concentration on the Hartford Art School. Abbe joined the university on June 27 and Congleton will join the university on June 30.
Congleton comes to the University of Hartford from the Groton School in Groton, Mass., where he was director of planned giving since 1994. Prior to that, he spent two years as assistant director of annual support at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., and four years at Boise Cascade Office Products in Billerica, Mass., as a sales representative.
He began his career as a helicopter aircraft commander at the Naval Air Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Va., and as a United States Naval aviator and helicopter flight instructor at the Naval Air Station South Whiting Field in Milton, Florida.
Congleton received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and American history from Wesleyan University in Middletown. He is also co-vice chairman of the National Development Council at the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Mass., and chairman of the past-parents committee of the Applewild School in Fitchburg, Mass.
Abbe most recently was director of corporate giving at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford. Prior to that, she spent 15 years with the Travelers Insurance Company, where she was the national marketing director of Affinity Marketing, Personal Lines and marketing manager, Financial Services. She also was an account manager for the Direct Response Marketing Group and scriptwriter for the Business Diversification Group.
Abbe’s higher education experience includes four years as director of annual fund and special gifts and assistant director of Continuing Education at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. She began her career as library director at The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford. She received her bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy of religion from Wells College and a master’s degree in library science from Simmons College.
