Accolades: Laura Pence, Luiz de Moura Castro
Posted 7/6/2005
Laura Pence
Laura Pence, associate professor of chemistry, A&S, recently was awarded a $50,000 grant from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund.
Her proposal, entitled "Magnetic Studies and Room Temperature Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage in Ruthenium Carboxylate Clusters," was an outgrowth of her sabbatical year at the University of Tennessee as a National Science Foundation RSEC (Research Sites for Educators in Chemistry) Fellow. The project features extensive involvement of undergraduates in carrying out the research.
"The formation and cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds is often one of the most challenging steps in generating an organic product, whether it is a pharmaceutical or a higher octane gasoline,” Pence said. “The carbon-carbon bond cleavage observed in the ruthenium clusters is extremely unusual because it occurs in air at room temperature, rather than requiring high temperatures and pressures that are more common for this type of reaction.” Pence said her research will further characterize this reaction.
Luiz de Moura Castro
Luiz de Moura Castro, professor of piano at The Hartt School, and his wife, Bridget, participated in a Symposium of Contemporary Music – Colombia-Brazil, at the University of Medellin, EAFIT, in Colombia from October 20 – 23, 2004.
The Dean of the Music Department, Moises Bertan, is a Hartt compostition alumnus. The symposium was coordinated by Hartt alumnus Claudio Suzin, currently on the faculty of EAFIT.
Luiz de Moura Castro performed works by Almeida Prado (the Concerto for Piano and Percussion “Pour le Decouvert du Bresil”), four hand works by Francisco Mignone and Sigismund Neukomm, in addition to solo repertory by Henriwque Osvald, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri and Edino Krieger.
The EAFIT symphonic orchestra was directed by Cecilia Espinosa, Hartt alumna, and the Contemporary Music Ensemble was directed by Hartt alumnus Claudio Suzin. Another Hartt alumna, Maria Figa, piano faculty at EAFIT, performed works by Villa-Lobos and Blas Atehortua.
