Making the Switch to New ID Numbers

The use of Social Security numbers as a primary identifier is quickly becoming a thing of the past at the University of Hartford.

On July 15, the university made the switch from using Social Security numbers to using eight-digit, system-generated IDs as the primary identifier for students, faculty, and staff in the University's information system (BANNER). The purpose of the change is to improve identification security.

The next phase in the transition process is scheduled to take place on July 27, when all ARAMARK systems will be converted to accept the newly printed University ID cards. The new cards, imprinted with the new ID numbers, were distributed to faculty and staff in June, and they were mailed last week to all students who are registered for the fall semester.

It is important to begin using your new University of Hartford Identification (UHID) number whenever possible, said Assistant Dean R.J. McGivney. Students should remember to bring their new ID cards with them when registering for classes.

For the next six months, you will be able to query the BANNER system by using either a Social Security number or UHID. If you enter a Social Security number, the BANNER system will automatically default to the UHID in the ID field.

“We strongly encourage you to begin to get in the habit of using the UHID,” McGivney said in an email to faculty and staff. “After the six-month period has ended, you will only be able to access student, faculty, and staff information via the UHID. In terms of any BANNER generated reports such as class rosters, transcripts, timesheets, etc. they will immediately begin using the UHID.”
