Over the past four months, the Department of Public Safety has noted an increase in the thefts of both desktop and laptop computers and accessories from most of the academic buildings on campus. In most instances, no evidence of any forced entry was found.

With this information in mind, it is very important to take preventative measures in order to deter any would-be criminal. The Public Safety Department reminds all members of the university community to take the necessary precautions to deter and in many cases prevent these burglaries and larcenies from occurring.

What can you do to deter or prevent theft?
  • Keep all unattended property items in locked and secured places.

  • Never leave unsecured property items in unattended lobbies or offices.

  • Remember to lock all doors if you leave your area for breaks or lunch.

  • Be certain to lock and secure all areas prior to going home for the evening. This includes windows as well as desk drawers where valuable or sensitive items are stored.

  • As often as is possible, inventory and be aware of where all university keys are stored and to whom they have been assigned.

  • Report all suspicious persons and activity to the Public Safety Department.
