Four Barney School of Business students entered their ideas in the 2009 Dell Social Innovation Competition, a contest that challenges college students to come up with “ingenious ideas to change the world.”

The team of Skyark – made up of Barney students Kyle Frisch, Brian Froehlich and Keith Wood – submitted a plan for a venture called Skyark Wind Energy Cooperative, a collaboration between residents and utilities to construct an expanding wind farm over Lake Michigan. Last December, Frisch, Froelich, and Wood were the undergraduate winners of the Barney School’s annual Business Plan Competition for their Skyark project.

Barney student Tom Kieley also entered the Dell Social Innovation Competition. Kieley’s one-man team, called TheLivingResume, submitted a project called “Fighting Unemployment With Personality.” Kieley proposed an interactive website where job seekers could upload video responses to predetermined questions, allowing employers to learn much more about the candidates than they would from quickly scanning resumes.

Earlier this month, 100 of the 527 ideas that were submitted for the competition were selected to move on to the next round. While the two Barney teams did not make it to the semifinal round, the Barney School is proud “that our students have participated in an international competition, and one that is consistent with our mission of global awareness and social responsibility,” said Assistant Professor of Management Linda Cohen.
