The following is a message from the Office of Human Resources Development:

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has published an interim final rule that narrows the list of documents employers may accept to verify employment authorization on the I-9 form. The revised Form I-9 became effective on April 3, 2009. Employers are now required to use only the new form to verify the employment eligibility of new hires and re-verify existing employees where necessary.

There have been significant changes to the forms including, but not limited to, removal of the option of presenting an expired U.S. Passport as acceptable documentation and the addition of another citizenship option.

Based on federal regulations, the University is required to use the newest version of the Form I-9, (dated 2/2/09, expires on 6/30/09) immediately and destroy any old versions of the form that may be in your offices. The new form can be located at www.hartford.edu/hrd/forms/ or from the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-9_IFR_02-02-09.pdf.

For questions regarding the I-9 Form, please contact your designated HR representative.
