University of Hartford students will kick off Earth Week by cleaning up the Hog River (the section of the Park River that runs through campus) on Monday, April 20.
All members of the University community are invited to join them. The clean-up will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Students will start the clean-up at the dam over the Hog River, adjacent to Lincoln Theater. The clean-up will then continue downstream. Participants will collect garbage and litter from the river and its banks, and haul it away for disposal.
The Hog River Clean-Up is a semi-annual tradition now in its 25th year. During past years, students have collected everything from plastic bottles to car parts and computers.
The Hog River Clean-Up is just the beginning of the University’s Earth Week observances. Other events will include:
Display of 50,000 Cigarette Butts
Throughout the semester, students from Assistant Professor Wick Griswold’s “Social Solutions” class have been collecting cigarette butts from the campus grounds in order to properly dispose of them. These cigarettes, along with literature explaining how cigarettes negatively impact the environment, will be displayed in Suisman Lounge, Gengras Student Union, on Tuesday, April 21, at noon.
Environmental Earth Fair
An Environmental Earth Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 22, from 12 noon until 2 p.m., on the lawn outside Gengras Student Union, weather permitting. The fair will be held inside Gengras if it is raining.
The fair will include displays and informational tables on recycling and sustainable living. There will also be environmentally-themed projects from University graphic design students.
For more information on the Hog River Clean-Up or the cigarette display, contact Assistant Professor Wick Griswold at 860.768.4081 or griswold@hartford.edu. For more information on the Environmental Earth Fair, contact Assistant Professor Katharine Owens at 860.768.5492 or kowens@hartford.edu.
