Panel Discussion to Explore Impact of the Youth Vote
Posted 4/20/2009
Several political experts will examine the impact of the youth vote on the 2008 presidential election during a panel discussion on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Suisman Lounge, Gengras Student Union.
Panelists will include State Rep. Matthew Lesser (D-Middletown) and Mary McClelland, deputy political director of Rock the Vote. Bilal Sekou, associate professor of political science at Hillyer College, will moderate the discussion.
Lesser is a first-term state representative serving Durham, Middlefield, and Middletown, Conn. In 2006, as a full-time student at Wesleyan University and president of the College Democrats of Connecticut, Lesser organized what is believed to be the largest student voter mobilization drive in the country, increasing voter turnout by nearly 700% at the University of Connecticut. This accomplishment is credited as one of the main factors in the election of Congressman Joe Courtney (D-2nd District).
McClelland oversaw field strategy for Rock the Vote, which works to engage and build the political power of young people in order to achieve progressive change in the U.S. In 2006, she served in a similar position for Young Voter Strategies, an organization that researched and formulated best practices for the youth vote.
