The School of Communication Graduate Student Awards and Research Symposium will be held on Friday, May 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Gray Conference Center.

The Symposium will feature exhibits by graduate students on their research projects and creative works. Several presentations explore the representation of gender, sexuality and race in television news, children's television, popular television shows like Dexter, and films such as High School Musical. An international perspective is provided by Tejeswi Pratima Dodda, who analyzes the portrayal of armed conflict in several films.

Graduate students examine issues of gender in various forms of communication and social contexts. Joanna Biron looks at gender differences in intimate relationships, Mary Helen Millham surveys how gender affects workplace policies such as parental leave, and Mackenzie Portfolio addresses the troubling topic of gendered violence in relationships.

The exhibits by Shannon Hughes and Anne Borsai showcase their work on their respective master's theses. Borsai considers whether the Disney film High School Musical challenges conformity or reinforces old stereotypes. Hughes' presentation examines the portrayal of gender and consumerism on MTV's popular show The Hills.

At this session, awards will be presented to graduate students in communication for outstanding achievement in research and teaching.

Refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Jack Banks, director of the graduate program in communication, at 860.768.5277 or via email at jbanks@hartford.edu.
