Accolades: Janet Kremenitzer

Janet Pickard Kremenitzer, assistant professor of education and coordinator of elementary education, ENHP, in collaboration with Dr. Marc Brackett, director of the Emotions Research Laboratory, Yale University, conducted a summer institute on Aug. 3 for teachers, administrators, and policy makers on "The Emotionally Intelligent Teacher and Implementation of Emotional Literacy Infusion in the Classroom."

The objectives for this institute were for the participants to know and be able to apply the following components:
  • the abilities model of emotional intelligence and how it applies to the school and work place
  • how to become an emotionally intelligent professional
  • how to infuse "feeling words" and other emotional literacy techniques education
  • topics related to the federally mandated No Child Left Behind law of 2001
  • the key relationship between teaching standards, learning standards, and successful academic and emotional outcomes for students/learners at all stages of life
The associate commissioner of education for the Connecticut State Department of Education, George Coleman, was a speaker, along with principals and teachers who have piloted Kremenitzer's and Brackett's new model of curriculum instruction in their schools. Kremenitzer and Brackett are publishing a book on this topic that will be available Spring 2006.
