The following is a message from Provost Donna Randall:

Dear Colleagues,

One of the priorities outlined in the University’s strategic plan is to strengthen graduate education. In an effort to fully realize this priority, the University will conduct a national search for a full-time graduate dean this academic year. Effective July 2006, the current Assistant Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies position will be divided into two positions. The former will continue as a rotating faculty appointment with a three-year term and the latter will become a permanent full-time staff position.

Because the Assistant Provost’s major responsibilities involve programs and policies related to faculty development, the title of the position will be changed to Assistant Provost and Dean of Faculty Development.

The Dean of Graduate Studies will provide dedicated leadership to the 40 master’s and doctoral programs at the University and the 1,600 graduate students. As the chief academic officer for graduate studies, he/she will develop, implement, and oversee University-wide policies and procedures to recruit and retain graduate students and to assure the academic integrity and quality of graduate studies.

I have asked Dr. Katherine Black, the current Assistant Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, to chair the search committee, comprising collegiate deans, faculty members, a regent, and graduate students. The job announcement for the graduate dean position will be posted in early October. Airport and on-campus interviews will be conducted during the spring semester, anticipating a graduate dean will assume the position in July 2006.

If you have any questions about the position or about the search process, please contact Dr. Black at 768.4504 or at kablack@hartford.edu

Sincerely,
Donna M. Randall
Provost
