Posted 6/17/2009
The Faculty Center for Learning Development (FCLD) is offering the following seminars for instructors during the 2009 summer months. Faculty interested in attending should contact FCLD at 768-4661 or email fcld@hartford.edu to register.
Blackboard 8 and the New Grade Center – Multiple Dates
Check http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/fcld/Seminars.htm for specific dates and times.
Woods Classroom, Mortensen Library
Prerequisites: Familiarity with adding content and navigating Blackboard
Blackboard will be upgraded on August 17. The upgrade includes a completely redesigned grade book called Grade Center, as well as minor improvements and enhancements to existing course features. Instructors who currently use Blackboard's Gradebook are strongly encouraged to attend this seminar to become familiar with the new Grade Center prior to the fall term.
Getting Started with Blackboard – Multiple Dates
Tuesdays, 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.
Woods Classroom or FCLD Lab, both in Mortensen Library
Prerequisites: Basics of personal computing and surfing the Internet
Get ready for fall term! In this general orientation to Blackboard, instructors will learn strategies for organizing Blackboard courses, review the many tools and features available in Blackboard, and start adding course content items like a syllabus, web links, and rubrics. Be sure to bring digital versions of course content; this hands-on seminar is designed to get faculty up and running on Blackboard!
Teaching with Images: Picture Scanning
Wednesday, June 17th, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
FCLD Lab (Mortensen Library)
Prerequisites: General computer knowledge
"Pictures are worth a thousand words" may be an old saying, but recent research shows that images can help with learning. So how do you get your picture into a Blackboard course or a PowerPoint slide show? You scan it! Come find out how a scanner can convert a printed image into a digital image. Participants will learn the few steps necessary to scan images, as well as the ins and outs of copyright and Fair Use. After attending this session, instructors are welcome to drop by and use the scanners available in the FCLD faculty lab.
Teaching with Images: Slide Scanning
Wednesday, June 24th, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
FCLD Lab (Mortensen Library)
Prerequisites: General computer knowledge
Scanners are not just for printed images! FCLD has a special scanner which scans traditional slides, converting them into digital images that are easy to insert in a PowerPoint show or upload to a Blackboard course. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their own slides, along with a flash drive if they have one, as this is a hands-on seminar.
Teaching with Images: Digital Image Editing
Friday, June 26th, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Woods Classroom, Mortensen Library
Prerequisites: General computer knowledge
Once you have scanned your image, you will probably want to edit it so it works well with your PowerPoint, meets a publisher's specifications, or is the best size for viewing in Blackboard. In this seminar, FCLD will show you how to perform some quick image adjustments, including cropping, resizing, and optimizing, so digital images display perfectly in Blackboard or PowerPoint without 'weighing down' your overall slide show and course size. FCLD staff will also discuss the storage, transfer, and printing of image files.
Avoiding Death by PowerPoint: Summer Faculty Institute
Monday, August 10th, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Woods Classroom, Mortensen Library
All too often PowerPoint presentations end up a series of static text slides read word-for-word to an audience, losing their real goal of engaging students and conveying meaningful content. This can discourage discourse, inhibit spontaneity, and diminish even the most experienced speaker - a phenomenon referred to as 'Death by PowerPoint'. Join FCLD for a daylong exploration on how to improve PowerPoint presentations. The day will feature best practices, demonstrations, and presentation tips, as well as hands-on learning for a variety of PowerPoint techniques.
Teaching Online: Digital Dropbox or the Assignment Tool?
Wednesday, August 12th, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Woods Classroom, Mortensen Library
Prerequisites: Familiarity with adding course content and navigating Blackboard
Without a doubt, Blackboard's Assignment Tool is the tool of choice if you want students to submit assignments online without using email. In this seminar, FCLD staff will discuss the advantages of using Blackboard's Assignment Tool, rather than the Digital Dropbox. Instructors already using the Dropbox should plan on changing over to the Assignment Tool, as the Digital Dropbox is slated for removal in Blackboard 9. Participants will also learn how to use Microsoft's comments and tracking tool to provide feedback on papers without having to print out an assignment.
Teaching Online: Using Blackboard's Tests and Surveys
Friday, August 14th, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Woods Classroom, Mortensen Library
Prerequisites: Familiarity with adding course content and navigating Blackboard
Are you ready to take the next step in Blackboard? Join FCLD as we learn how to make the most of Blackboard's quizzes and surveys. This session will demonstrate the step-by-step creation of quizzes and surveys in Blackboard, tips and tricks, and discuss strategies for using Blackboard surveys and quizzes that may improve student learning outcomes.
