The Wellness Committee introduced the sport of Dragon Boat Racing at the “Spring into Wellness Fair” in April. We are lucky enough to have an experienced racer on the Wellness Committee, and want to extend the invitation to University employees, friends and family to establish a University of Hartford Dragon Boat Team.

Head Cross-Country and Track & Field Coach Kathy Manizza has competed in Dragon Boat Racing and has agreed to volunteer her time to assist in the creation and training of a University Dragon Boat Racing Team to compete in an event this August. This will be the 9th Annual Dragon Boat Festival in Hartford, and it is anticipated that there will be more than 1,000 participants in the event.

If you are interested in joining the team, Kathy has been gracious enough to schedule a time for employees, friends and family members to “get their feet wet” and determine if there is enough interest in forming a University team for the 2009 event.

Please mark your calendars for Monday, June 22, at 5:30 p.m. at River Front Park in Hartford for a trial experience with Dragon Boat Racing. There will be test paddles from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Paddles and life jackets will be provided. NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED AND ANYONE IS WELCOME TO TRY.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes/sandals, which can get wet (splashed not swimming). There is no charge for the trial.

Bring a light picnic dinner and beverages for after the paddle. The park closes at 8 p.m. We promise there will be lots of fun and laughs!

Please visit the following site for more information on Dragon Boat Racing: www.riverfront.org/events/dragon/.

If you have general questions about the sport of Dragon Boat Racing, please contact Kathy Manizza at ext. 5710 or manizza@hartford.edu.

If you are interested in attending the information session on June 22, please RSVP to Jen Conley in HRD, at ext. 4665 or jconley@hartford.edu. At that time we will also provide directions to the park.

We hope to see you there!
