John Carson Quoted in the Hartford Courant

John Carson, vice president of University Relations, was quoted in the Hartford Courant on Sept. 9. Speaking about Hartford's high rank on a list of college towns, Carson said the city "has many opportunities whether it's for artistic activities, cultural activities or doing internships at Fortune 100 or 500 corporations and ultimately getting recruited into these companies." Humphrey Tonkin, president emeritus of the University and director of the President's College, was a guest on the Fox 61 Morning Show on Sept. 10. Tonkin discussed the President's College and the upcoming Showcase event, which will be happening on Sunday, Sept. 13.

University President Walter Harrison was mentioned in an Associated Press story about collegiate athletics on Sept. 3. Harrison, who chairs the NCAA's committee on academic performance, spoke about an NCAA recent survey of student-athletes that indicated many of them practiced more than the 20 hours-per-week allowed. Harrison said the survey's findings had concerned him and "prompted a rethinking of how the organization might enforce the 20-hour rule." The story appeared in several newspapers, including the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. and the Detroit Free Press.

Move-In Weekend at the University was the lead story in the Sept. 3 issue of West Hartford News. Members of the incoming Class of 2013, including new students who came here from Colorado, Alexandria, Va., and Philadelphia, were interviewed for the story and spoke about making the transition from high school to college. "It's just so big," said Marsha Kreyndel, a graduate of Hall High School in West Hartford, of the University campus. "High School is just one building." 

Student Emily Davidson was profiled in the Hartford Courant on Sept. 6. Davidson talked about her book, 101 Naturally Healthy Eating Tips. Davidson, who lost 35 pounds following a diet of healthful, organic foods, says "vegetables should be your focus. They're too often made a side dish or something a meal can be without."
