Woody Doane, professor of sociology and associate dean at Hillyer College, recently attended the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in Philadelphia. While at the meeting, Doane was a panelist in a workshop on teaching racial and ethnic relations, and he gave a discussion presentation titled "Racial Ideology, Racial Discourse, and the Reproduction of Racism."

At the conclusion of the meeting, Doane assumed the position of chair of the ASA Section on Racial and Ethnic Minorities. Doane will serve as chair of the 600-member group until the 2006 ASA Meeting in Montreal.

Mary Fister, assistant professor of English at Hillyer College, attended The Frost Place Master Class held in August at poet Robert Frost’s 19th century farmhouse in Franconia, N.H. She was one of 16 poets accepted from across the country after a juried review of their work.

The weeklong Master Class consisted of lectures on technique, workshops in which the accepted poets received critiques of their work, and poetry readings. The 16 poets worked with the same faculty throughout the week, leading to very specific and profound discussions about technique and craft as the week progressed. This year’s faculty included Carol Frost, Richard Frost and Baron Wormser.
