Accolades: Robert Lang, Ingrid Russell
Posted 9/19/2005
Robert Lang, associate professor of cinema, College of Arts & Sciences, recently completed two weeks of research at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris for his book project, tentatively titled Identities in Transition: Culture and Nation in the New Tunisian Cinema.
While in Paris, he also met with the editor of the special series, "Champs visuels étrangers" at the academic publishers, L'Harmattan, who wish to translate his first book, American Film Melodrama (Princeton UP, 1989) for publication in France. Other Anglophone authors already published in the series include: Tanya Modleski, Edward Baron Turk, Richard Dyer, and Ginette Vincendeau. Lang is responsible for the translator’s fee (7,000 Euros). Any suggestions as to how he might raise this sum—grants, sponsorships, fellowships and the like—will be most welcome.
Ingrid Russell, professor of computer science, College of Arts & Sciences, co-edited a special issue of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. The special issue on "Feature Selection and Extraction for Classification" was published in March 2005 by World Scientific Publishing. Russell co-authored the special issue's lead article, titled "Current and Future Trends in Feature Selection and Extraction for Classification Problems."
Russell's co-authors are Lawrence Holder of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas, Zdravko Markov of the Department of Computer Science at Central Connecticut State University, and Anthony Pipe and Brian Carse of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of the West of England.
Russell also co-edited the proceedings of the 18th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society (FLAIRS) conference, which were published in May 2005 by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Press. Russell served as program co-chair of the FLAIRS conference and also organized and chaired a special session on artificial neural network applications. The FLAIRS conference was held May 15-17, 2005 in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
