Beth Richards Mentioned in New York Times Story About College Program at Prison

Beth Richards, director of the Rhetoric and Professional Writing program, A&S, was mentioned in a Nov. 16 New York Times article about a selective and rigorous college program offered by Wesleyan University at the Cheshire Correctional Institution, a high-security prison. Richards is teaching English to inmates who were selected to participate in the program. Read the story on nytimes.com.
Ruthanne Doherty, a member of the women's basketball team, was profiled in the Hartford Courant on Nov. 22. Doherty talked about her father's experience during Sierra Leone's civil war. "I was young and I didn't understand it," Doherty said in the article. "But as I got older, my dad would bring back pictures that showed little kids without limbs. It touched my heart." That made Doherty decide to study biomechanical engineering so she can help people in Sierra Leone get artificial limbs. Read the story on courant.com.
University of Hartford Provost Lynn Pasquerella, who will become president of Mount Holyoke College next summer, was profiled in the Springfiled Republican on Nov. 21. In the article, Pasquerella says "women's education transformed my life." President Walter Harrison was also quoted in the article, saying "I think Mount Holyoke has made a spectacular choice, but I feel very sad about her not remaining here because I think she has done an outstanding job and I really enjoyed working with her." He said "we're absolutely encouraging faculty to be flexible about student attendance just as we are being flexible with our employees."
