Giannaros on WTIC, Freund in the Jewish Ledger, Desmond in the Record-Journal, Black in the Advocate
Demetrios Giannaros, professor of economics in the Barney School of Business, was a guest on WTIC-AM's "Mornings with Ray Dunaway" on Feb. 16. Giannaros discussed government debt, and the problems facing the U.S., Greece, and other countries with large budget deficits.
In recognition of its 25th anniversary and as a present to the community it serves, the Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies has fostered the creation and presentation of a children's opera based on a Yiddish folk tale. "My idea was to create a combination between the famed children's opera, Peter and the Wolf, and the popular Jewish musical, Fiddler on the Roof," Greenberg Center Director Richard Freund told the Connecticut Jewish Ledger. The opera will be performed in Westport, West Hartford and at the University of Hartford Magnet School during the week of March 14.
A story on how businesses, such as local candy-maker Peter Paul, and local artists responded to the challenges of the Great Depression, which was the topic of a symposium presented by Mortensen Library and the President's College, was published in The Citizens News of Naugatuck on Feb. 17. Roger Desmond, a professor in the School of Communication, was quoted in The Record-Journal of Meriden, Conn., on Jan. 30. Desmond commented on whether kids are growing up too fast. "I think Jon Benet Ramsay and the way she looked put a spotlight on that weird cult of childhood modeling," said Desmond. The new book by Tim Black, associate professor of sociology and director of the University's Center for Social Research, was featured in the Valley Advocate of Massachusetts on Feb. 4. When a Heart Turns Rock Solid describes the lives of three Puerto Rican brothers from Springfield over a 19-year period. The Advocate calls the book "a real-life narrative worth reading."
