Diana J. LaRocco, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, ENHP, will be leading several invited presentations at the 21st Annual International Conference on Young Children with Special Needs and Their Families, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15, in Portland, Ore. The sessions are: “What's Happening in Washington?”; “Reauthorization of IDEA (Individuals With Disabilities Education Act)”; and “Advocacy and You: The Basics.”
The conference is sponsored by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children. More information about the conference can be found on the DEC web site.
LaRocco serves as chair of DEC’s Governmental Relations Committee. DEC is an international membership organization that is especially for individuals who work with or on behalf of children with special needs, birth through age eight, and their families. The function of the Governmental Relations Committee is to make recommendations and carry out activities related to public policy issues critical to DEC and the field of early childhood special education.
LaRocco collaborated with co-author Deborah A. Bruns, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, on a recently published journal article concerning advocacy. The article, titled “Advocacy is only a phone call away: Strategies to make a difference on behalf of children and their families,” appeared in the Summer 2005 edition of Young Exceptional Children. The journal is a peer-reviewed national publication produced by DEC.
