WTIC Praises University's Hosting of Tournaments; Harrison in CTMirror; Barney Students on NBC Connecticut; Goldstein in Huffington Post
WTIC-AM's Scott Gray praised the University for successfully hosting the 2010 America East Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. In his commentary on March 11, Gray said "it's not too soon to say, 'Let's do it again.' The America East has to be delighted with the job at Hartford, hosting two tournaments at once, something a lot of observers didn't think could be done. The CTMirror covered University President Walter Harrison's testimony before the state legislature's Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee on March 9. Harrison testified in support of a bill that would eliminate a requirement that nonprofit private colleges and universities get state approval for new or revised academic programs. He recounted for legislators his surprise several years ago, when he was told that a state regulatory process was holding up a proposed new academic program to train cantors, those who sing or chant prayers in synagogues. Since the University has well-known programs in music and Jewish studies, Harrison didn't understand why a private university would need state approval under a procedure that could take months. Barney School students involved in a community relief project focusing on Save the Children's efforts in Haiti were featured in a story on NBC Connecticut's website. The article discusses an ongoing class project to raise money for Haiti through the website Hartford4Haiti.com. Paul Hanson, a student in Assistant Professor Linda Cohen's 'Leadership in the 21st Century' class, said the project "has given me and my classmates the opportunity to help provide support for a noble cause." A blog post by Professor Warren Goldstein, chair of the A&S History Department, appeared in the Huffington Post on March 10.
