Jacob Harney, associate professor of biology, A&S; Betsey Smith, associate dean of the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions; Mala Matacin, associate professor of psychology, A&S; and Marissa Cloutier, instructor of biology, Hillyer College, recently attended the Summer Institute of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement in San Jose, Calif. The conference is part of a national reform effort that connects the improvement of undergraduate science education to some of the most vexing civic challenges our nation and future graduates will face.
The team is offering a new course in Spring 2006 entitled “Issues of Health and Society: Weighing In.” The course (AUC 190X) will evaluate the physiological, psychological, and social causes and consequences of obesity.
