Walter Harrison in Washington Post & USA Today, Gaspar in New York Times, Rizzotti in Stamford Advocate
University President Walter Harrison was quoted in several media outlets this week as the NCAA released its latest Academic Progress Rate report. Harrison is the chairman of the NCAA committee on academic performance. He told the Washington Post, “We have more critical issues facing us today than at any time I can remember. But I believe that one of the bright spots is just what we’re reporting today, the improving academic success of student-athletes.” Read the rest of the article on washingtonpost.com.
Harrison told the Chronicle of Higher Education, “We’ve seen steady progress. I think that’s wonderful, and it’s a great indicator that coaches and administrators understand the goal of academic reform.
Harrison was also quoted in USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Anniston Star in Alabama, and on WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio.
A blog post by Dan Gaspar, head coach of the men’s soccer team, ran in the New York Times on June 5. Gaspar is on the coaching staff of the Portuguese national team for the World Cup. Gaspar wrote about another trip he took to South Africa, when he met Nelson Mandela. He wrote, “Today when I encounter what I perceive as problems I reflect back to our handshake and realize that my problems are tiny compared to his. I realize how trivial my issues are. Women's basketball coach Jennifer Rizzotti was quoted in the Stamford Advocate on June 8. Rizzotti talked about hiring former Erica Beverly as the director of Basketball Operations for the University. Rizzotti said, “Obviously, we’re thrilled.
