Vasquez in Inside Higher Ed, Freund in South Africa's Sunday Tribune, Ellis in the Hartford Courant

Richard Freund, director of the Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies and professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, will be featured in an upcoming issue of the Sunday Tribune in Durban, South Africa and could be syndicated throughout South Africa. Freund will be speaking in Johannesburg about his recent archaeological expeditions in Israel, Spain, and Sobibor in Poland.
Don Ellis, a professor in the School of Communication, was featured in the Hartford Courant on July 18. Ellis is teaching a summer course at Ariel University, an Israeli public college in a settlement in the West Bank. The course, "Communication Issues and Political Conflict," focuses on the media's portrayal of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "Some of these students are so rigid in their beliefs, but I believe practicing cooperation can lead to results," Ellis said. "I never pose it as a magical solution, but it can break down barriers, improve their ability to think critically and lead to positive conclusions while tearing down stereotypes. Kerry Tanney, a 2010 graduate, was profiled in the Courier Times, a newspaper in Bucks County, Pa. Tanney is traveling to Thailand to be a volunteer English teacher. Tanney, who plans to become a kindergarten teacher when she returns to the United States, says she was drawn to international service after her semester studying in Galway, Ireland. "It was such an amazing experience to live in another country and get to know how the people there live," she said. "It's not really enough just to visit, you have to live there."
