Soccer Senior Selected to All-Star Game
University of Hartford men’s soccer senior Sam Groves was recently invited to play in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League’s All-Star game held at Harvard University on November 28. The midfielder is one of 22 players from the New England region selected to represent the Division I All-Star team, which will challenge the Division II All-Stars with a 3 p.m. match-up.
A tri-captain in 2010, Groves was one of just three players to start and play in all 15 games this season. He closed out his final campaign ranked fourth on the team in scoring with two points on a pair of assists. In addition, both assists came on the game-winning goals in back-to-back home victories over New Hampshire and Army.
Groves, a native of Sutton, Mass., saw action in 67 career games for the Hawks while making 60 starts. During his four seasons in the scarlet and white, he helped Hartford compile an overall record of 27-29-13, including three consecutive appearances in the America East tournament (2007-2009). Groves finished his career with 10 points on a pair of goals and six assists and helped the Hawks’ defense shut out 22 opponents. A two-time America East Academic Honor Roll selection and a Commissioner’s Honor Roll member in 2009, Groves will graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in history in May.
Hartford completed the 2010 campaign with a 5-10-0 overall record and 2-5-0 mark in the America East, finishing seventh overall in the conference rankings. The Hawks lose three seniors – Bojan Delibasic, Groves and Jamie Thomas – to graduation.
