Jeffrey P. Cohen, assistant professor of economics in the Barney School of Business, attended an invited consultation with the Ellison Institute of Harvard University on Nov. 9-11, 2005. The Ellison Institute is a new organization with a focus on global health.

As a part of the consultation, which was held in Oslo, Norway, approximately 30 economists from throughout the world discussed current relevant issues of interest to the Institute in the area of health system efficiency. Cohen presented one of his research papers (joint with Catherine Morrison Paul), entitled “Cost Function Analysis of Hospital Efficiency in the State of Washington.” This paper applies some innovative statistical techniques to the problem of measuring the efficient sizes and locations of hospitals in Washington State. One important finding of the paper is that higher levels of employment in hospital “clusters” in the state would lead to lower costs, due to lower search costs because of a large pool of qualified workers in the area, and knowledge “spillovers” due to research activities that take place among researchers across different hospitals in the area.

Michael J. Panik, professor of economics, Barney School of Business, has just published a textbook titled Advanced Statistics from an Elementary Point of View. The book is published by Elsevier/Academic Press. (Mike Panik action figure sold separately.)
